Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee
by Charles J. Shields
An unauthorized biography of Harper Lee.
Despite a complete lack of help from Harper Lee, Shields has compiled a great deal of information about her life and family. It turns out that Lee, who never wrote another novel after To Kill a Mockingbird, is still alive and splits her time between NYC and Monroeville, Alabama. Interestingly enough, this book read almost like a novel, and I found it to be a compelling and involving story. I'd had no idea how important she was to the researching and writing of Truman Capote's In Cold Blood or about what a truly obnoxious little shit Capote was to her.
